New Protected Environment Announced for the Eastern Cape
|
Amakhala Game Reserve is one of eight Eastern Cape reserves that form part of the newly-enacted Indalo Game Reserves Protected Environment, which recently received “Protected Environment” status under the
Eastern Cape Biodiversity Stewardship Programme through the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA).
These reserves support biodiversity-based eco-tourism, strive for sound ecological management and commit to positive socio-economic upliftment. Their inclusion under the Indalo Game Reserves Protected Environment has increased the conservation status and value of 68,075 hectares of Eastern Cape land, spanning six biomes, including two global
biodiversity hotspots of Fynbos and Albany thicket, and protects more than 88 species of threatened or endangered plants and animals. Indalo reserves also employ 1,079 people and support 3,992 dependents.
“This is a historic achievement for these eight private reserves that recognise the value of working together with all sectors of our society, including government, to achieve a greater conservation goal,” says Mark Palmer, Conservation Manager of
Amakhala Game Reserve and recently elected Chairman of Indalo. “Our ‘Protected Environment’ status will attract more tourists to our region and to our lodges. We are also encouraged that other reserves have indicated their intention to join the Indalo Game Reserves Protected Environment authority.”

World Environment Day at Amakhala
|
Proud to play its part in creating awareness about the importance of protecting our environment, the Amakhala Foundation celebrated World
Environment Day 2018 on 5 June by hosting an Educational Day at the Amakhala Conservation Centre for Grade 1-3 learners from neighbouring schools. World Environment Day is the United Nation's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. It began in 1974 and is now celebrated in more than 100 countries. The main theme of Amakhala’s Education Day was “Forests” and learners from Sidbury Primary School and Alexandria Christian Academy
learnt, in a hands-on and fun way, about the importance of our forests and the devastating consequences of deforestation. At the end of the day, everyone came together to make a pledge to care for and protect our forests. Everyone’s hands were painted green and their handprints were left on a wall at the Amakhala Conservation Centre to commemorate their pledges.
“The Amakhala Foundation is proud to
have played our part in World Environment Day 2018, by raising awareness in our local community about the importance of forests and the urgency of protecting these precious resources,” says Tammy Smith, Environmental Educational Coordinator of the Amakhala Foundation. “The children had a wonderful time and also gained practical knowledge about how essential forests are, not only for the survival of forest animals, but also for human survival.”

There’s never a dull moment at Leeuwenbosch! Even as winter settles in, it is a splendid time of the year with beautiful blue skies and aloes blooming in vivid, bright orange. We’ve also enjoyed some interesting guests! We loved welcoming this group of bikers who arrived on bikes dating from the 1800’s that are still in great condition! We also enjoyed hosting a fabulous group of ex-St Andrew pupils celebrating their 25-year school
reunion. What fun they had! Our staff bid them goodbye with their stunning voices, dancing and drums, leaving everyone with goose-bumps!
